Thaalavattam Montry Manuel - Friday, 3 pm.
Percussionist, graphic designer and artist, Montry Manuel, founded Thaalavattam in 2011. Growing up in the Southern Indian port city of Cochin, he was influenced by his father, who instilled in him a deep love for music and the planet. He owes his musical foundation to his guru, the loving and inspirational Jerry Peter. Montry played in the popular Indian Indie band Swarathma for 7 years, before breaking away to pursue his dream of making a difference for the environment, through music.
Thaalavattam, which means ‘A Circle of Rhythm,’ is a unique percussion-project from India that harnesses the universal power of music to inspire people to REDUCE, REUSE AND RETUNE. We fashion all our musical instruments from FOUND OBJECTS creating cutting-edge sounds and inspiring creative action for the planet.
Our ‘organic grooves’ emerge from discarded tubes, industrial waste materials, paint cans, plastic bottles, bicycle parts, etc. These are reborn as hybrid percussion kits, oating jugs, tubes, didgeridoos and more, and then electronically sampled to offer a musical experience that is earthy and organic, yet ethereal and otherwordly.
Hornsman Coyote - Saturday, 3 pm.
Hornsman Coyote is one of the leading trombone players in the world of dub and reggae music today. At the same time with his unique singing, he represents one of the most outstanding reggae voices of South/ Eastern Europe.
Born in Belgrade (Serbia) 1975, Coyote entered the world of reggae in 1989. Influenced by horn lines of Burning Spear and Rico Rodriguez, subconsciously he build his own original style as trombone player, based on expressions and feelings rather than technical perfection. Inspired by reality of his surroundings singing followed trombone.
Coyote delivers universal "Wake up" calls for self reliance, peace, love and justice as well as personal feelings in his lyrics. In the last decade Coyote released eleven solo albums and countless number of singles in all formats. A and B sides vinyl releases with artists like: Lee Perry, Max Romeo, Luciano, Earl 16... He is credited as a horn arranger and player on Grammy nominated Lee "Scratch" Perry album " Back on the controls ” (2014) & Max Romeo "Horror Zone" (2016). Experimenting with different music genres was never a strange playground for Coyote, he also collaborated with artists like Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly), Ghostpoet and Eyesburn. Yet, the biggest success and international attention was brought to Coyote by modern roots reggae anthem "Belly of the Beast". A collaboration with Jamaican conscious, legendary Singjay Jah Mason.
A remix of this crucial track was released in summer 2017 by established drum`n`bass label "Bad Taste Records". In 2017. Hornsman Coyote comes with the new piece of jewel, his eleventh solo album called "Sevengreen". Judgement horns and wailing thunder voice, produced by the world wide known reggae production "House of Riddim". Different but made to stand the test of time. That`s Hornsman Coyote.
Chris Beer - Sunday, 2.45 pm.
Chris Beer continues to walk his unique musical path with the intoxicating, soul-infused new album titled „Lion in the sun“. In his personal blend of reggae, soul, ballad and rock, Ziggy Marley meets Jonathan Richman with a salutary nod to John Cage. Versatile and eclectic, each track on „Lion in the sun“ tells its own story imbued with deep-felt rhythm and emotion.
“It’s not about me,” says Chris Beer, “I let the tune, the beat, the words take over; and the song takes on a life of its own.” The new collection includes titles Werner (a hommage to the beautiful st city of Vienna and its unique joy de vivre), 21 Century camel (a song about loneliness in our age of connectivity), Der Alternatiefseetaucher (a catchy tune about the age of self promotion) and The pumpkin song (a song about the birth of the singer’s baby girl). Chris Beer’s goal for these new songs was to capture a soulful, sincere minimalism.
He quotes John Cage – “I want to get clean and mean and minimalist.” – adding: “I am always chasing the words or the melody that will turn an idea into a vision of its own. I try to reduce my music to the smallest amount of elements, but that doesn’t mean the song is simple. Each element has to be interesting and profound to give the whole integrity.”
Max Doblhoff & VienaLoco – Live, Saturday 1.30 pm.
It all started in Club Roxy in Vienna when Max Doblhoff and Jakob Zdarsky brought the Live & DJ Crossover Clubnight FOXIROXY into being. Through this great success of this club series the crossover project 'VienaLoco' was formed. Their strength is the gift for improvisation of the musicians with many years of band experience. VienaLoco is playing music for the moment – so diverse and colourful as the musicians theirselves. It doesn’t matter if they play Acid Jazz, Electro Funk, HipHop Breaks, Disco, Deep & Tribal House, or Afro/Latin/Cumbia – Max Doblhoff and his musicians are serving excellent crazy food for funk.
