Adaptogens are plants that support the natural physiological systems of the body, mainly through the adrenal system. They help the body cope with stress and promote normal function by regulating hormonal balance. The benefits of adaptogens are numerous. They have an anti-fatigue effect that increases attention and cognitive function, even during mental exhaustion and stress periods. Further research shows positive effects on immunity, brain health, and sleep cycles while also reducing inflammation.
Some of the most commonly known adaptogens include ginseng, medicinal mushrooms, and many others. They help create and maintain homeostasis in the body, continually working to regulate systems to calm or energize as needed. In other words, they help the body adapt to various stressors.
Although it’s not defined as one, cannabis has the key attributes of an adaptogen, thanks to its effects on the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It is known that cannabinoids regulate the ECS, which is a master regulating system of other physiological systems of the body. That implies all the balancing and harmonizing activities of an adaptogen. Adaptogenic features and properties of cannabis and its major components will be reviewed and implications for its rational medicinal uses will be provided.
